Getting started with uwin

camera trapping

Although UWIN is exploring other systematic methods of sampling wildlife, most partners focus on studies related to camera trapping. The Camera Trapping Design Overview serves as in-depth explanation of the UWIN’s camera study design.

See the Site Overview Form and Camera Station Field Form as templates to log individual camera site and sampling information associated with each camera set, check, or pull. Also see the Camera data sheet as an example of how to collect multi-site visit data. Online tools such as Epicollect5 are useful for digitally recording these data in the field.

UWIN has a recommended equipment Vendor List based on partner experiences in the field. Participants may use other equipment based on available funding and project objectives.

Data storage

Urban Wildlife Information Network Online Database

The Urban Wildlife Information Network uses Google Cloud to store our growing number of camera trap images collected by partners. Once our partners are configured onto the database with a Google account, they can upload, edit, and annotate images. Partners leads can also add users with varying access to involve outside project members such as volunteers.

See the UWIN Database Manual for instructions and details for how to use the UWIN Database.

Data Sharing

All UWIN partners control and manage their own data. When members and outside researchers wish to conduct multi-city research projects, they must proceed through the Research Proposal Process.
